Buy Broken Arrow was an awesome 1996 action movie directed by John Woo and starring John Travolta and Christian Slater. It’s probably the coolest movie about nuclear warheads being stolen from the U.S. Military ever. The score is composed by Hans Zimmer and this review is part of. Readers beware, this score has got some nostalgia value.
It’s true I love the movie, but the score has always fascinated me. When La-La Land Records released an expanded 2CD version in 2011 I just had to have it in my collection. The 90s was a special time for Zimmer. His action scores really stood out.
There were some great action scores in the 90s by big names such as Jerry Goldsmith, John Debney and John Williams, but Zimmer forced himself a spot in action heaven with his amazing 90s action scores and Broken Arrow is one of them. It has that unmistakably 90s Zimmer action sound to it and it has a great theme as well. I love the brothers theme you can hear in ‘Rope-A-Dope’ and ‘Right Down There’ and of course ‘Brothers’ among others.
He even stole a few synth lines from Harold Faltermeyer’s Rocky IV, but since I love that score as well it makes this extra special. ‘Butterflies’ is a different kind of cue with inclinations towards jazz. You can literally hear a mix of all his 90s action scores here, but it is heavy on the electronica and it has a guitar twang feel to it as well which makes it stand out a bit. I’d like to mention ‘Something’s Coming’, ‘Humvee Chase’, ‘Mine Shaft 2’, ‘Hammerhead’, ‘Nuke Disarmed’, ‘Brothers’, ‘Mine’, ‘Nuke’ as my 6 star cues.
Broken Arrow is pretty perfect in my eyes. This expanded edition really is a treasure in my collection and I should listen to it more often. HIGHLIGHTS CD1: 1. Rope-A-Dope 2.
